“If I Was Your Girlfriend” from the series ‘1987’ 💜
In 87 Prince released what in my opinion was his greatest piece of work - ‘Sign O the Times’
This song was one of the defining moments on an album that itself was a defining moment in #music. The song was intimate yet funky. It was fun, sexy, emotionally complex but very straightforward. It was the song you put in the middle of a really good #slowjammixtape which I became quite “famous” for during my high-school years. Art’s purpose is not to give you comfortable answers but to inspire you to ask better questions & this song had a bunch? Why is he using more than one voice to sing? Who is he singing to? Is he even a “he" in this song? Is he saying this out loud or is it mostly inner dialogue?
It was at that moment that I realized this dude could’ve easily just made PurpleRain type albums for the rest of his career but he courageously chose to shed his skin yet again in service to a vision. I would like to believe he inspired the revolutionary genre-expanding music that followed in the years soon after. LivingColour, Public Enemy, Fishbone, DeLaSoul , JungleBrothers, Tracey Champman etc This album had everything in it yet there had never been anything quite like it. 1987 was a magical year and this was the soundtrack to most of it!☔️
