I am a long time resident (49 years). Its good to see the new folks coming into the neighborhood, I just don't think that peoples' attitude should be that the neighborhood wasn't nice before they arrived. While it is true that police patrols have stepped, new stores have opened, I think that the neighborhood has always been a cool, hip, safe place to live.

I agree with her even before she tried to clarify her words better. First time she said it, the statement wasnt hostile it was the ugly truth; and she said it the way we all speak on it in the comfort of our envoirements.
Whats sad to me is that it took Gentrification for things to clean up around the area. Roads are being fixed, parks are being cleaned up and good shops are moving in (even though this shouldn't harm the mom and pops' ones)

I love Rozie and I am glad a well known person like her speaks up about it.

I totally understand where Rosie is coming from. I mean I personally think gentrification is a disgusting thing. To me it's no different than genocide except instead of killing people you are killing a community; and in some ways, that's almost like killing people. When you take away their way of life by pricing them out of the only place they've known their entire lives. This is not to say that a community cannot and should not welcome new faces, not at all. Just like Rosie says, the water must keep flowing. I know exactly what she means by the whole "elitist" attitude. Like the people who's lives you are disrupting means nothing to them. That is an unfortunate attitude to have. That's like coming into someone's home and acting like you run the place. A little common respect and courtesy never hurt anyone. Plus, most of the gentrifiers never understand how cold it to do such a thing as displace people until it happens to them.... anyone ever heard of immanent domain? lol

It is called over-kill. Clean things up but don't use so much disinfectant that you kill 99.999% and leave that tiny bit that becomes immune and much more dangerous.
Cultural balance is of no concern to big money in real estate development.

I grew up in the DC area and in the New York area primarily and recently I moved to California. Well, it was two years ago. At first, I came into Oakland than I soon migrated to North Bay. This area shocked me beyond belief. Empty eyes. No hellos. It's sick and nauseating. How hard is it to give a simple nod. Also, with DC's gentrification I saw that happening. Here was a small town in the Belly of the Beast and after a while you could walk the legendary U Street and hardly share warmth through our portals of light. And that is sad. I could see it in Brooklyn too, clearly. The subject at hand. The most flavorable place on Earth. Eff money. Have some class, Gentrifiers, when it comes to simple hellos. And I will try to do that same.. meaning.. I don't want to get to a point where I get used to the coldness and than pass by a beautiful person with no hello. Maybe they know better, so should I. Great article. Great websight. Thanks!!
